On Frida, the biopic she'd once hoped to star in: "I didn't like it. Not at all. I think Salma Hayek did a great job, but I still think ultimately the soul of Frida Kahlo nobody knows. The movie doesn't even scratch the surface of who she was and what she went through."

Madonna in W Magazine

Thoughts on the movie? Madonna thinking she can play Frida? Madonna has one of frida's paintings, I think it is the birth one.

I have to agree with Madonna. But I didn't really like Salma Hayek's portrayal of her. I didn't feel she captured her power. I also felt the movie was too sentimental and Hollywood. I don't think Madonna could play her either. Madonna's not a great actor. And even though she has the power-thing going- it's in more a manipulative Hollywood way. I'd would have rather like to see an unknown in the role.

Wow- I thought I was the only one who felt this way! While Salma Hayek looked enough like Frida, (albeit, somewhat) and if a scene called for her being sad, happy or whatever, she was able to "act" sad, happy, etc-she just wasn't able to bring her to life.
I think there are any number of excellent but perhaps undiscovered actresses that could have played the role of Frida. Perhaps an actress who knows what the average person goes through in a place like Mexico, who has experienced real injustice, and/or what it is to really be working class....?

My guess is that the studios thought they had to get someone like Salma and other "A-List" celebrities in order for a film about Frida Kahlo to "sell". I think they underestimated just how greatly admired Frida is and how a good but unknown actress would have been just as equally sucessful. I did enjoy watching Alfred Molina as Diego though. I also thought I was the only one who believes Madonna can't really act, and uses her power in a manipulative-as opposed to empowered- way.

BTW, has anyone seen the movie "Frida" from Mexico? It was directed by Paul Leduc, made in 1988 and it starred Ofelia Medina. That movie had an interesting portrayal of Frida. Not a lot of dialogue, but more re-enactments of various scenes of her life.

Madonna....echk! (although there was a time...WAY back when)
and I must agree, Salma fell short...way short.
I also believe an unkown perhaps could do her more justice.

I'll be on the look out for the '88 Mexican flick!

I saw that movie quite a few years ago. I found it very interesting. Unfortunately the copy at the library was lost years ago. I'm still looking for another copy.

Well, I would not say Frida was an average person by any stretch of the imagination. She certainly was not of the working class either. Yes, there was a lot of suffering in her life, but she was raised in relative privilege.

You are right- Frida was not working class; but she seemed to identify with their struggle what with her involvement with Communism. No, I was referring to a potential unknown actress that would play her. I would also add that this potential actress might possess an artistic soul at the very least so as to bring a person like Frida to life.

Before I forget, the movie Frida by Paul Leduc was made in 1984 more or less, and I believed released to the US in 1988- my mistake. ; )

Yes, the studios always go for the star power. If they can they get a known star to play the roll. I do not think that Madonna would have done a good job, Salma at least captured part of Frida. However, as with all Biographical based movies, it is very hard for actors/actresses to capture everything about a person that he or she is portraying.
